Mirador del Semáfor – Barcelona, Spain

Exhibitions, Published Work, and Personal History

PERSONAL:

Originally from an island in the Pacific NW, Kiersten Miller began her photographic career as a means of not getting lost.  The pictures she took were of bus station maps, buildings, and streets, which became breadcrumbs for finding her way through foreign cities.  Over the years, what started as a navigational tool grew into a passion for creating surreal and dark images.  The majority of her work involves the use of long exposures taken in early morning light or just as dusk approaches.  Kiersten is drawn towards a desire to express a stillness in life – particularly against industrial backdrops.  She likes the idea of hearing inanimate objects speak and often wonder what they might say if the world was still long enough so that we might hear them.  The images she creates are often with that in mind: they start with a sliver of an idea when she’s out shooting and eventually emerge with breath and a voice that is their own, as if they were right here with us, having a conversation.
